Stories of Hope: Yvette
Yvette was diagnosed in 2001 with primary sclerosing cholangitis, this liver disease eventually put her on the transplant waiting list for over six years. While she waited, Yvette started volunteering in several organizations and enjoyed the work of educating her community and registering organ, eye, and tissue donors so much that even after she received the gift of life from an anonymous donor in 2012 she continues to share her story.
“Hopefully I can encourage more people to become organ donors so the wait for an organ transplant will be shorter for other people,” she says.
She continues to have the active lifestyle she led before her liver transplant, only now she has a new community to participate in. Yvette is an active member of Team North Carolina as a Transplant Athlete and competes in different track events against other members of the transplant community. She’s won Gold, Silver, and Bronze in national events but in August 2019 she is attending the World Transplant Games representing Team USA and she has her donor to thank for it.
